rank | Fri Aug 14 22:01:22 https://ed...tics/trump-steam-catapult-navy Very outdated’: Trump’s directive to revert to steam catapults on new aircraft carrier baffles naval experts President Donald Trump has directed the US Navy to scrap the modern electromagnetic launch system on an upcoming aircraft carrier and instead revert to an older, steam-powered catapult method — potentially adding billions to its price tag and delaying its deployment into the late 2030s. The directive, outlined in a White House memo and fact sheet released Thursday, orders Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to submit a plan within 60 days to install the catapult systems on on a carrier being built that is slated to take on the name the USS Doris Miller. While the White House argues the move will “fix critical long-term issues,” naval experts tell CNN the sudden shift is highly unusual. The newest US aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, was built with an electromagnetic launching system known as EMALS. However, the US Navy’s 10 older carriers, the Nimitz class, still rely on steam-powered catapults. Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, added that the move would require the USS Doris Miller, which is already under construction, to be redesigned. The cost of that, he told CNN, “will probably be into the billions” and it could delay the carrier — which was expected to be in service around 2034 — “until the end of the next decade.” The electromagnetic system is similar to a high-speed rail train, making it “a lot simpler,” according to Clark. Meanwhile, the steam catapult has a lot more parts, such as valves, pressure regulators and pistons, he said. “The electromagnetic ones have proven themselves to be easier to operate and less expensive in terms of personnel and maintenance. So the Navy has saved $100 million a year on the Ford class carrier,” Clark said. When reached for comment, a White House spokesperson directed CNN to the fact sheet, which argues that the memorandum aims to “fix critical long-term issues in Navy shipbuilding and ship repair programs.” Chris Cavas, a veteran journalist and the host of a podcast on naval issues who said he’s been on launches that have used EMALS and steam catapult, argued that the memo “is very old thinking, very outdated.” “I can tell you firsthand, you can feel the difference and the difference is that it’s smoother,” Cavas said of the electromagnetic system. “It’s much less stress on the aircraft.” Cavas and Clark also said that the Navy now faces the logistical issue of finding a manufacturer of steam catapults. Cavas told CNN that while EMALS are contracted, the Navy used to build steam catapults itself. “They haven’t had to make new steam catapults since the George H. W. Bush,” Cavas said, referring to the aircraft carrier that entered service in 2009. “That’s a long time ago and all that infrastructure is gone.” Similarly, Clark said, “Nobody builds them anymore. There’s no steam catapult manufacturers in the … US anymore so they’d have to restart that production line, which would cost tens of millions of dollars to get going and that’ll be, it’ll take years to start that up again and build the first catapult.” The USS Doris Miller’s delay, along with the retirements of carriers in the Nimitz class, could mean the US Navy will “be very short on carrying capacity” next decade, Clark added. Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain, criticized the memo in a post on X on Thursday, saying, “I’ve launched off the front of aircraft carriers hundreds of times, have a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, and am a test pilot and even I wouldn’t suggest to the Navy how to engineer specific systems on its ships.” “Donald Trump should stick to what he knows best — ballrooms, bankruptcy, and bullshit,” he added. |

rank | Fri Aug 14 22:11:25 I waa speaking to someone who works in this field recently. The short answer is that both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. EMALS is more maintenance-intensive but can be adjust for split-second changes in wind conditions. Steam-powered is more reliable but not customizable. FWIW. |

We are talking about the same man who has singlehandedly destroyed the American wind energy industry because hates the view of turbines visible from his golf course in Scotland. Trump is the most running-on-vibes-not-facts president ever. |

rank | Sun Aug 16 11:59:09 Trump knows best https://ww...sign-match-trumps-preferences/ The U.S. Navy is considering a major redesign of its new aircraft carriers to better match President Donald Trump’s preferred aesthetic for the warships, according to seven current and former U.S. officials familiar with the matter. The service is evaluating the feasibility of moving the multistory tower that acts as the carrier’s command center farther forward, toward the middle of the ship, to resemble older vessels, the officials said. The review, which has not been previously reported, is in response to Trump’s concerns about the “look” of the new Ford-class ships, where the tower is near the rear, these people said. The timing and extent of the Navy’s evaluation is unclear, with current and former officials cautioning that the service was concerned that such a change would require significant time and money. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive situation. Moving that command center, known as the “island,” would be the second major design change prompted by the president, who on Thursday issued a national security memorandum directing the Navy to develop a plan to revert to older steam-powered catapults on future carriers. The systems help launch jets off the ships’ flight decks. Trump’s preference, current and former officials said, is for the new aircraft carriers to look more like those that were in service during World War II. |

rank | Sun Aug 16 16:54:23 Jergul: He latched onto it in his first term, and it was just related to cost and integration glitches on Ford. He's been obsessed about it ever since. He kept talking about it during the campaign. It's not reacting to some new intel - he's just senile. Same about how he wants to move the islands forward on the Fords to look more like WW2 carries, even though that's got no upaide at all and is purely detrimental. |

rank | Mon Aug 17 10:53:46 TW It is 100 percent insane. The military is subject to the CoC (chain of command in this case). Whatever Trump says gets filtered down and warped to something reasonable. In this case, accept that the next carrier project will be delayed by two years. The CoC risk is if Trump actually formulates something as a executive order. An EO kind of has to be followed to the letter without malicious compliance. |

rank | Mon Aug 17 11:42:15 "The military is subject to the CoC (chain of command in this case)." The real problem is that men who claim to be willing to lay their lives down in defense of this country, aren't willing to lay their jobs and benefits down to assert to Congress that Trump is insane, a threat to our national security, and call for his removal. The real problem is that Republican Representatives and Senators would sooner allow Trump to harm our national security than risk his wrath and that of his cult. The real problem is that this isn't insane at all. This is perfectly normal in a world where the American people voted to elect an amoral shitbag who had already tried to overthrow the government. - |

Some rational analysis here *might* notice that, in an Option A or B national election, voters have twice decided that Option A (Trump) was, despite all of his manifest obvious flaws, better than the Democrats' Option B, and wonder why that might be. Maybe next time, don't have the senile dotard withdraw midway through the race and replace himself with one of the single most unqualified and unlikeable candidates in modern political history. |

I don't need to wonder. I know exactly what the issue is. "Maybe next time, don't have the senile dotard withdraw midway through the race and replace himself with one of the single most unqualified and unlikeable candidates in modern political history." Unqualified ... unlike Trump? Unlikeable ... unlike Trump? Does Trump seem likeable to you? Quit lying to yourself. This is all about traditional power (white and male) throwing a tantrum because it was gradually losing power ... or others were gradually gaining power which is at least as bad. It's the reason why Biden (white and male) was able to defeat Trump despite being an unlikeable shitbag himself, while Hillary and Kamala couldn't. That's why I didn't want Biden to drop out. I knew that senility had no bearing on anything. Biden may be losing his mind, but Trump has been insane forever. He was never normal. He has always been an asshole. He's always been a criminal. He's always been batshit. And batshit is so irrelevant that Trump played his out in front of the entire nation in the most extreme way possible ... and his whiteness and maleness still got him across the finish line ahead of his competitors who lacked one or both of those qualities. The people who voted for Trump will lose everything to a crooked, corrupt, and incompetent, white man, before ceding any more power to others. People who think "this is better" need to take long hard look in the mirror. - |

rank | Tue Aug 18 08:35:35 Rugian: Let's be clear: there's no way Kamala would have been as bad for a Reaganite vision of America as Trump has been. This was screamingly obvious to anyone with half a brain before the election and obviously objectively true to above with half a brain now. The problem wasn't Kamala or her policies, the problem is how fucking poor the judgement is of anyone who - comparing her to Trump, even from a right wing perspective - convinced themselves she was not only the worse option but radioactively so. It's just race and gender, with confabulation on top. "Have sane policies and competent politicians guys" I had to take a moment to stop laughing. What, like the republican party did? Your country is doomed because a substantial amount of your voters are insane and vote for insane and incompetent politicians, and have absolutely terrible judgement. Your statement being a classic example. Kamala was sane and probably competent enough. Kamala had policies best described as "meh". Trump, well we already saw his first term, and was none of those things. |

Seb
rank | Tue Aug 18 08:40:57 Honestly, the biggest problem the republicans have is that all the actual ideological Republicans are never Trumpers, all the voters are just gullible angry and confused reactionaries that think they are Republicans, and the media candidates and politicians are all deeply cynical, narcissists or borderline fascists who understand the voters that identify as republicans as an easy mark. |

rank | Tue Aug 18 18:16:41 "Not now, but I checked at the time." Even if you hadn't, you could simply determine that based on her position in the party. Up until Trump, "meh" is how you got ahead in the major parties. Every policy position is polled and test marketed. You could be an outlier on this policy or that policy, and of course there are local considerations, but mostly you had to be "meh". You had to adhere to party orthodoxy. Republicans like to forget how Biden got nominated to face Trump in 2020. There was a Democratic establishment conspiracy to stop Bernie Sanders who was the early leader. Backroom deals were made and other candidates dropped out so that the mainstream vote could coalesce around a suitably "meh" candidate. - |
