During the dive the plane hit about mach 1 and exceeded it's designed airspeed for a given altitude by about 250 knots (plane did a good job to survive that) Pilots were stabbed/fighting. Speculation is that it was a suicide attempt by a russian expat.

The Israeli passengers beat him and took back control of the plane before crashing. The rudder fluttered off (common at mach 1) but the plane survived.
