rank | Sun Sep 30 04:47:39 2012 Just about time! I figured I'd do a lead up this year so that my predictions have a little more meaning on race day :p And once again, for those unfamiliar, full-distance Ironman events see athletes through a single day triathlon of a.. 2.4 mile Swim, a 112 mile Bike, followed by a 26.2 mile Marathon Run The World Championship event takes place on The Big Island of Hawai'i, with the ocean swim starting off Kailua Pier. Once out of the water, athletes jump on bikes and travel NorthWest along the Queen K Highway, turning around in the little town of Hawi. When they arrive back at transition, the marathon takes them up and down the coast, with a final run along Ali'i drive being the final signal of awesome. There is a 17 hour time limit -- with the course closing at midnight -- but the pro women usually finish the distance at about 9 hours and the pro men usually finish close to 8 hours... |

rank | Sun Sep 30 05:14:25 2012 This year should be an interesting race specifically because of all the craziness that's happened! 4-Time Women's Champion Chrissie Wellington took the year off of the sport to do real-life stuff, including an international book tour. This leaves a clear window for Mirinda Carfrae, 2010's champion, who was only a little more than a minute behind Chrissie last year. But, Leanda Cave and Caroline Steffen won't make it easy... On the men's side, Craig Alexander and Chris McCormack have been holding the title, but it's hard to say if either of them will finish on the podium this year. It might make sense for Andreas Raelert to step up, but it's really going to be close. I almost think the winner will be someone I've never heard of ;) And Lance Armstrong -was- going to be racing this year after spending last year training for triathlon, but his recent news put an end to that.. which is probably for the better. Doping doesn't seem to be an issue in triathlon because it's more of a individual sport; no direct competition and smaller prize purses. Usually the cheaters go where the money and exposure is... That doesn't mean some people don't do it, and I'm suspicious of some of the pro's, but for the most part it's still a clean sport. More later :p |

And Steffen only a minute behind too. Carfrae is great but it's good to see that she has competition, and Leanda totally earned a win here :) |

I don't think that 50:32 is his fasted swim of the 2.4 miles in Kona, but maybe that helped him this year And I feel bad for Raelert but it seems like he doesn't have enough for #1 in Kona; 3 *years* of this has got to hurt.. so either he'll save nothing next year or he'll fall off the board making too big of a risk :( So Congrats to Pete Jacobs and Leanda Cave! It looks like Craig Alexander finished in 12th with an 8:40 (said: "no excuses, just not my day") and Chris McCormack didn't race, but Jacobs kept the win for Australia :p It looks like the NBC Broadcast will be even cooler this year because they'll be doing more background into the race -- like the leadup training and such. I think that's in 2 weeks meow |

rank | Sun Oct 14 18:24:30 2012 ..I'd really like to qualify for 2013 but it seems like I won't have time for more than 70.3's (half-distance Ironman events).. training for a full really takes -all- of your time.. hours and hours on the bike, miles in the lake/pool, running for hours too.. to place Top-5 (which earns a Kona space) I think I'd have to take 4 or 5 months off.. maybe 3 at the least... hmm.. something to think about :D |

rank | Sat Oct 27 22:47:13 2012 Oh, Craig Alexander is wearing an Aero helmet now. Kind of a surprise |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sat Oct 27 23:07:33 2012 Probably no one would read this, but fyi: Aero (aerodynamic) bicycle helments like this.. http://www...8610-1-13484_800_800_False.png ..have all sorts of wind tunnel statistics that support their cutting of minutes and minutes off of long distance, time-trial events. So they *seem* like a great idea for a long races where drafting isn't legal (like Ironman), because you cut through the wind, but the tradeoff is that if you don't hold proper head position you can lose that same benefit. And also, they have less ventilation, so in an event like Kona (where it's really hot) you may burn up in them and *lose* time.. Craig Alexander won 3 Championships with a regular, vented helmet, and Chrissie Wellington 4.. but maybe Alexander wanted to try something different.. |

rank | Sun Oct 28 05:27:02 2012 do you approve of the winners? |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 28 06:43:44 2012 Of course! :) Did I seem judgemental? Leanda Cave especially worked really hard - it's really great to see her win the year Maybe it would be have been interesting to see Craig Alexander get another win, but like I mentioned above, I didn't expect for he or Chris McCormack to be on the podium (those two have gone back and forth for the last 5 years).. especially in a post-Olympic year (for Macca) and a year after Alexander's record-setting day. It's really difficult to time another peak day after events like that And I like the variety in finishers without Chrissie Wellington (sorry!), but if she's back to training for next year it will be a really cool race.. |

rank | Sun Oct 13 01:18:04 2013 Instead of making a new thread this year... 2013 Ironman World Championships!! Right now it's 6 hours and 45 minutes into the race; about 1 hour 15 minutes until the leaders finish. It's Sebastian Kienle and Sebastian Kienle up front in the men's race, Mirinda Carfrae and Leanda Cave up front in the women's race. Looking really close for both races! |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 01:18:43 2013 lulz, copy paste didn't work; that's Frederik Van Lierde and Sebastian Kienle up front |

rank | Sun Oct 13 01:26:09 2013 Oh neat.. it's usually the *Ford* Ironman World Championship, but this year GoPro is the primary sponsor. Pretty surprising; Ford has been the sponsor for a long time |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 01:34:11 2013 Actually it's Rachel Joyce up front, but Carfrae and Cave have been making up a lot of time on their splits; still about 13 miles to go in the run, so they may catch up |
McKobb
rank | Sun Oct 13 01:44:11 2013 What is the order of the races? |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 01:45:50 2013 How do you mean? The racers? |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 01:51:33 2013 If you meant the qualifying events, this is the events list: http://www...s.aspx?d=ironman#axzz2hYJuKxRv {races all around the world} For the professionals there's some kind of point system, so they can either do well at full events or half events to qualify for the Championship --- Oh noes! Joyce is about to lose it. Mirinda Carfrae only needs to make up 2 minutes, which with 9 or so miles left is doable |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 02:13:49 2013 Oh, fyi, Chrissie Wellington officially retired from triathlon, some time ago (I think December 2012 is when it was official). It was initially just a year off for a book tour, but then she decided to stop altogether. The new strong field is Carfrae still (she's the most consistent), Leanda Cave, Caroline Steffen, and of course Rachel Joyce. There have been others, of course! But these few have been top On the men's side, Craig Alexander and Chris McCormack have opened up the field now that they're getting older (they're now older than any overall winner has been). In the new field, peeps like Andreas Raelert have gotten a lot of competition too, so it's a lot of new names now (or names that have been hidden in the later top 10). Carfrae within 30 seconds!! Looks like she has this down easy meow. Joyce won't be able to keep up. Carfrae may even finish a couple minutes ahead |
Cherub Cow
rank | Sun Oct 13 02:16:06 2013 Yep! Carfrae just flew past Joyrce at an aid station. Hopefully Joyce didn't just crash mentally and can hold on for second, otherwise she may end up in fourth or fifth |

Cherub Cow

rank | Sun Oct 13 02:26:13 2013 4 miles left for Luke Mckenzie! He has first place locked right now; second place is about 4 minutes back. Big competition for the podium on the women's side!! |
