From what I've read by crazy Star Wars fans, Obi-Wan was supposed to be the best defensive fighter around, so any attack where he had a good defensive position would be a really bad idea. As for Darth Maul, I guess that could be spun as him being so Sith-arrogant that he didn't think that he could possibly lose at that point... Okay, but now back to reality: that was definitely stupid. Can you imagine how much air time Obi-Wan must have had to both jump up and let gravity take him back to the ground behind Maul? And Maul doesn't take a single swing in that time span? Yeah, it's stupid. I'd have preferred something like if Obi-Wan had activated the light saber and swung it at Maul mid-air (so Obi-Wan not needing to move), cutting him in half that way. :D
