Hmm... this is borderline conspiracy theory, but it feels truthi-, so I'll share ;D

Someone suggested that Ellen might be getting cast under a poor light so aggressively because the network simply cannot afford her anymore; it's cheaper to get a new host. E! did the same with Joel McHale. They had to keep giving him pay increases every contract, and at some point that means that the cost of producing the show bloats, so they cut him. The difference is that E! didn't have to deal with public backlash because "The Soup" wasn't that popular, whereas Ellen has a much bigger following on NBC.

The counterpoint would be the (apparent?) grassroots nature of her being targeted for cancellation. "Cancel Ellen" articles tend to point back to a Tweet by comedian Kevin Porter: http://twi...us/1241049881688412160?lang=en
"Respond to this with the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean & I’ll match every one w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank"

..but even looking at that Tweet.. we basically have someone who *paid* to weaponize the social media lynch mob to find dirt on Ellen, which makes you wonder about the source of his motives. It's probably unlikely that NBC approached some rando comedian and had him weaponize his followers, but anyone who mobilizes the mob in this way loses points in my book ... I have to wonder if social media sites will add protections against mobilizing the mob like this in the future.

Liveleak text: "Ryan Whitaker, 40, had been playing video games with his girlfriend, Brandee Nees, into the night when he went to answer the door with a gun in his hand. Whitaker immediately began lowering his weapon and raised a hand in the air before he was shot in the back three times from point blank range. "

"Youtube text": Phoenix police had portrayed Whitaker's shooting as an emergency domestic violence call. A 30-minute police body camera video released this week indicates the incident started over a noise complaint from a neighbor upstairs who called police twice.

[incident roughly 1:20]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=R49P9TuFLOQ

somewhat obscured & blurred... (by brief elbow glimpse relative to torso @ ~1:24) seems like initially he moved gun behind his back (but probably to indicate -not- threatening them rather than being sneaky)... the rest of his difficult to see motion seems to be lowering to place on ground

my impression anyway...

maybe back to no-knocks? :P

Yikes.. yeah, they murdered that man.

"but probably to indicate -not- threatening them rather than being sneaky)"
That was my impression. He came out thinking he'd be in a fight with neighborhood hooligans, saw it was police, tried to put the weapon away. Then the less experienced officer shot him. Poorly trained police in this case.
..and then they're standing there with him bleeding out, not rendering aid. Fucking hell..
Without the blur it's difficult to say, but from the rest of the video it looks like the non-firing officer figured that the shots would be fatal, which is why he didn't render aid. In general, that's not a call officers should make (i.e., *always* render aid), but maybe the shots were just *that* obviously placed? He transitioned way too quickly to treating it like a crime scene — Whitaker was still alive. Is this fucking Minority Report? "Oh, he'll be dead soon, seal off the crime scene."

Pretty fucking insensitive to stand there explaining why it was fine that they killed her boyfriend. He was acting like he was explaining it to his union rep.

And it sounds like her talk about the door viewer was related to a previous issue, which she may have been about to explain was why Whitaker (her BF) came out semi-aggressively. Maybe she was saying that if he had done like last time, he would have looked out through the viewer, seen it was the police, and this wouldn't have happened — poorly trained police or not?

Imagine losing a loved one like that. Reminds me of that Onion article from 2017 (substitute "Amazon" for "Police"):
"Popular New Amazon Service Just Comes To Your House And Kills You"
http://www...s-to-your-house-and-1819917496

The police seem to have released the videos with the censors in place. This one has less blur and shows the firing officer's body cam:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=675vUIszwtw
Jeff Cooke, who fired, had a perfect view and shot Whitaker in the back, so he panic-fired. At the very least he should lose his job, but I think they should also charge him with manslaughter. For manslaughter charges: He definitely did not act as an officer should (part of why he should lose his job), and even a reasonable person would not shoot at someone's back as he crouches and puts his weapon down with the other hand raised. Whitaker was surrendering and was executed by an idiot. It's sad that this had to make the news for the department to take action (they still have not fired Cooke, but maybe now they will).

I say it every time: police need better training.
That officer who fired should not have even been allowed a firearm if that's how he handles a stress moment. And police need to be willing to take the risk on themselves to avoid a bad shooting, not react based on personal fear.

..
"they noted the various allegations out there weren't specifically about Ellen herself"

Yeah, and things I've read about Ellen herself haven't been very interesting at all. Like, she (supposedly) had employees chew mint gum before having in-person meetings with her, she didn't show up to Dakota Johnson's birthday party (because we're all in kindergarten and that's a big deal), and her on-show pranks can have a little bit of a cruel bend to them (I'll give them that, but it's always a thin line between pranks so lame that no one cares and pranks with just a little bit of comical cruelty). And a story not about Ellen herself: another thing was that she had a black employee who was made fun of by the other employees (supposedly called her the "PC police"), which anti-Ellen peeps use as evidence of a bad work culture. Kind of a stretch.

Kind of sounds like these people have never had a bad boss before, or they think that bosses have to be 100% friends all the time, which just isn't realistic when you have a show to run.

A Florida sheriff is making national headlines for not just criticizing face masks, but banning them for his deputies and staff — as well as visitors to the sheriff’s offices — on the same day that Covid-19 deaths in his county hit an all-time high.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods, the top cop in the north central Florida county, issued his prohibition in response to a local ordinance mandating masks that was passed by the Ocala City Council last week.

Woods noted that the new regulation allowed an exemption for government entities, and so he decided to exercise his legal authority to not just neglect to require masks, but to actively oppose them.

“Now, that ordinance exempts government entities and leaves the decision to the figure heads,” Woods explained in an email to his staff. “So, as for us, my order will stand as is when you are on-duty/working as my employee and representing my Office — masks will not be worn.”

He also added that any visitors to their offices would be asked to remove their masks, or they would be asked to leave.

I mentioned in the last thread ( #UGTwit118 #CptPortland ) that someone was suspicious that the CDC's turnover of COVID-19 data to HHS had resulted in data manipulation to make it look like GOP states had reducing numbers while DNC states had remained the same... Checking back in on him, he's sort of issued a retraction. He deleted the other video ( watch?v=wsSwzVomWhU ) and posted this:

"Stepping back a claim about COVID-19 data"
[Jeff Hester YouTube; July 20th, 2020]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2O5ZG7g77s
"In part my decision stemmed from the fact that when I removed Texas and Florida from the data the size of the effect decreased significantly. In part my decision stemmed from the fact that I could not identify a clear mechanism whereby the HHS could influence case data in a way that would not become apparent in data independently reported to states. I remain uneasy about the data, but want to be careful not to overstate a claim."

Far less sensational. The short version is that individual states would have to manipulate their data before sending it to the HHS. That could be the case for why Florida numbers went down. It traces back to Rebekah Jones and her claims that Florida was cooking the books. Florida also failed to report some cases and had a backlog. Not sure about Texas.

He also removed the video because of idiots in the comments. Like, he doesn't want people to throw out the baby with the bath water, thinking that *if* the HHS was manipulating data, then no government health entity could be trusted at all on anything, thus, "[Why bother wearing masks or social distancing? Hoax!]" ;p

Kind of silly to fold just because people misinterpreted his interpretation of the data. But, at least he posted a retraction.

so maybe HHS contacted all R states and told them to start fudging the #s as they have control now and won't expose them :p

Trump has swapped in a herd immunity doc and sent away Birx for noting the virus is spreading, so pretty sure there will be continued very limited helpful efforts from this administration, it's up to governors to handle it how they see fit

"so maybe HHS contacted all R states and told them to start fudging the #s as they have control now and won't expose them :p"

Could be! :D
That could account for the varying levels of participation. Like, maybe a couple of HHS calls to Texas and Florida, who were like, "[Hell yes! Let's cook the books and get back to $$$business$$$!]" After that, they wouldn't need *that* much book-cooking participation to account for the rest of the slope drop. The HHS' new reporting standards may account for that too, though I'll avoid speculating.

"continued very limited helpful efforts from this administration, it's up to governors to handle it how they see fit"

Which is so sad. This is one of the few times that federal leadership actually matters and could make an impact. States making poor choices pull every other state down with them.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis rejected early mask mandates, which was stupid for a tourism state. Then he let the April stay-at-home order expire, then continued dragging his feet about the mask order (still none; it's city-specific, if at all). Now their numbers *look* like they're going down, but they have a back log of untested materials. Even Texas adopted a mask order (July 3rd), which sort of keeps to Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's promise of getting back to work "safely". That mask mandate may be why they've seen decline since July 16th. TX Governor Abbott has also been pushing for people to get tested and stay vigilant about health guidelines, which seems against Trump's wishes? Vermont, Delaware, Missouri, California, and Hawai'i seem to be the current problem children (spiking right now). Each its own story.

Blerg. #MoreDoom ;p

Maybe some trick with the front vs. rear brakes? Like,
- car backs onto the rear truck's ramp,
- puts car in neutral,
- puts on the parking brake (rear wheels only), then
- front truck backs up with the ramp all the way down, so the front wheels roll onto the front ramp but the car stays on the rear ramp
?

I would just call a tow truck, so this may be a few too many steps removed for me ;D

Han starts out as a nice, virtuous schmuck stuck as little more than a slave on some shithole planet. He even takes on a virtuous quest to do good for some group of people (it's been a while and I half-heartedly watched it once). He gets betrayed, is forced to make difficult decisions. And just like that, he's apparently the scoundrel we all know and love.

Or something. It's really very stupid. Basically, Han is a wishy-washy dreamer with nothing but good intentions in his heart until a few people betrayed him.

I think the title was their usual clickbait parody, but the rest of it... yeah, pure strangeness XD

Arg :/
That doesn't really fit for his character... in the original, he seemed like someone who had never known *anyone* good ;)

To bring up the Ellen thing again, here's another fun point about that from a Joe Rogan clip that popped up after I followed a UP link :p

"The Ellen Degeneres Backlash"
[JRE Clips; Aug 14, 2020]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDb7Qwwzgyg
[1:34] "There's only a few jobs in entertainment, right? So I think a lot of the cancel culture shit is probably these motherfuckers want those jobs."
..he also goes into a CIA conspiracy theory thing where he suspects that Ellen covers CIA narratives, but Joe Rogan doesn't exactly follow up with that point very well. It could have been a funny distraction ;D

That Ellen clip was hilarious.

Joe: "she's holding on to him, it's odd."
dude: "yeah"
Joe: "she's allowed to do that because she's a woman, but if she was a man holding onto a woman's arm that long..."
dude: "that'd be rape."

Like.... yeah. Probably.

A lot of those issues go away with social intelligence, like, just being able to read the room.. but that doesn't mean it's easy.

Try Blender! It's awesome :D
I usually use the Adobe suite, but I've been watching a lot of Blender tutorials so I can do 3D work there and import to After Effects (Adobe doesn't have a good built-in 3D creation program). Nothing usable has materialized from it yet (just an emu and a person's head), but I have plans >:D

This Blender guy, Grant Abbitt, gets called the Bob Ross of Blender sculpting. He explains things but also gives some background talk-static while you work alongside him. A pretty nice way to spend 20 minutes if you want a great intro. I was pretty excited just being able to see a rewarding result so quickly.

That store opening was frightening, btw. The closeness of those situations should already be avoided, but toss a pandemic in? These people have bad priorities. Even in the best case scenario (deals on hand sanitizer and soap), that's just not a good risk... :p

Well I was being about 20% serious. Clearly holding an arm is not rape. But I can tell you if Ellen was holding my arm, I'd be wigged the fuck out and I probably wouldn't say anything. If I was holding Ellen's arm, I may be escorted off stage.

It might just be a protective arm sleeve or forearm/wrist brace? I wasn't able to find anything weapon-related

YouTuber "Shamook" does DeepFake improvements of bad CGI in movies. This was his improvement of Princess Leia in Rogue One:
[May 16th, 2020]

Comments point out that he could have softened the contrast (her eyes look too dark for the scene), but overall it looks more human, whereas Disney's CGI looked glassy-eyed and disproportionate.

Awesome! :D
I posted a couple of her videos in the music thread. Very cool to basically form her own orchestra with layered recordings.

2Cellos seems to have put out a new album. I hadn't checked in on them much since their old "Welcome to the Jungle" video (2011). Checking their history.. looks like they went on location in 2017 for a Game of Thrones theme song:

Also funny that he's making orphans now XD

Some additional emu research may be necessary for that project..

That green dress at 4:05 was impressive :D
I went back to see if I knew how that one was done.. I suspected her left hand, but maybe that wasn't it. Maybe some kind of hook system in the curtain or on her back?
So that was crazy. Probably witchcraft ;p

So what was cool. I'd seen videos of him flying in the suit but had no idea how much engineering went into the suit itself (suit, not the jet pack). Mark III will have to clean up some of the visibility issues ;D
