Historic storm starting to lose its grip
Lead Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
Nov. 13, 2009 5:06 pm ET
Areas from the Middle Atlantic region will continue to see wind, rain, coastal flooding and battering waves but overall impacts coming down.

Areas around the Virginia/North Carolina border have picked up from 8 to 13 inches of rain. Into Saturday, 1-to-3-inch rains will focus on eastern Long Island and southeast New England, though much less than has been experienced farther south.

Last evening, the winds peaked with this storm as Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Cape Henry, Norfolk and Oceana gusted to between 70 and 75 mph, causing many power outages. Into tonight, winds will gust to between 40 and 50 mph from Nantucket and Long Island to the Jersey shore and the Delmarva Peninsula. The risk for power outages will expand northward with these winds.

Strong winds will focus on southeast Massachusetts on Saturday, possibly gusting to over 50 mph on Nantucket.

The persistent onshore flow will also result in more coastal flooding, beach erosion and high waves.

Coastal flood warnings or advisories continue from parts of Long Island and coastal Connecticut southward to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and as far inland as the Potomac in D.C. and up the Delaware to Philadelphia.

A peak water rise of 2 to 4 feet (locally higher) is expected from coastal Virginia to the central Jersey coast. This could put the water up to near 6 feet during high tides on Saturday morning.

High waves continue into Saturday, peaking between 18 and 22 feet from the Delmarva Peninsula to south Jersey. Farther north along the Jersey coast, waves will be in the 15-to-18-foot range and from Long Island to Nantucket in the 10-to-15-foot range. The waves will be between 10 and 18 feet from the Outer Banks to Tidewater Virginia. The beaches will continue to experience destructive erosion.

The storm and high-pressure area will move eastward away from the East Coast, this weekend. Some rain and wind will push farther northward through New England later Saturday into Sunday, but overall effects will be minor.

Update:

So far, 12 people said they are going for sure, 6 people said maybe, and 5 people said no.

assuming half of the 'maybes' go, we are expecting around 15 people for the trip. This should bring down the lodging significantly to around $100 per person for two nights. We are looking at either Wynn or Venetian.

Since the sign up is due this Friday, I'll be waiting till then until I make the hotel reservation.

I'm telling you guys once again, this is a great opportunity. When can you stay two nights during in one of the best hotels in the middle of the Strip for only $100 (without any promotion coupons)? The more of you sign up, the less the price will be.

I would want at least two people here to sign up. cmon people, let's have some fun.

As for the room, it depends which hotel we stay in. If we decide on Venetian, we will most likely rent two 1100 sq. ft suites (Suite Rialto), which will cost us around $1,100 for two rooms, two nights, excluding tax. If we decide on Wynn, we will most likely rent one room of 1,800 sq. ft (Suite Salon), which will cost around $1,600 for two nights, excluding tax.

New Pac NW Storm Unleashing Rain, Wind
by Tim Ballisty , on Nov 16, 2009 2:46 pm ET
The Pacific Northwest is fully entrenched in a very stormy weather pattern.

Welcome to November, this is normal. Yes, this is one of if not the rainiest (and stormiest) months in the towns and cities of the Pacific Northwest.

Still, even as a resident of the region who may be used to these wet times, it's hard to ignore some of these powerful north Pacific storms that crash into northern California, Oregon, Washington or farther north into coastal British Columbia.

Pacific IR satellite imagery

After getting poured on with heavy rain and snow on Sunday into Monday, another storm is right on the heels and may prove to be the strongest of the storms to strike this week.

You can see the next storm circled in the image just above.

High wind advisories: Oregon | Washington | California

Winds streaming off the Pacific will rush inland helping to topple trees, tree limbs and power lines.

With leaves still on some trees, tree damage may be worse than usual as leaves act as parachutes or sails on a boat. They capture the wind help to pull limbs or trunks to the ground.

So it goes nearly without saying that many shouldn't be totally surprised if there are power outages in and around your community by Tuesday morning.

Flood watches and warnings: Oregon | Washington

Have you seen the rain totals? Over the next 2 days, amounts in some areas will near 4 inches (much higher totals in higher terrain/upslope areas).

During the course of the week, parts of western Washington and Oregon will experience rain totals nearing 10 inches.

Map focus: Northwest Storms

The "Map focus" link will take you to collection of relevant maps and links that will provide guidance and keep you ahead of the storms. Here you'll find maps with radar, rain/snow forecast, current wind speeds, alerts and satellite imagery.

High surf warnings: Oregon | Washington

Then comes the waves, the large and powerful waves. The NWS is forecasting wave heights of 20 to 30 feet "pummeling" the coasts of both Oregon and Washington.

Combine those waves with a high astronomical tide (new moon) and strong onshore winds and the result will be some coastal flooding, beach erosion and water level rises.

Getting back to the earlier message - yes, the Pacific Northwest is used to November Pacific storms. In fact they expect them. But this storm does carry a heavy load with it and should not be quickly dismissed.

And if the point is that you are all dirt poor, why are you going to waste your fucking money pretending to be badasses by getting overpriced and seemingly useless suites at expensive hotels?

Fuck you are such a fucking dumb fuck poison.

Of course the reality is that you aren't really going to Vegas anyway, so enjoy the fantasy while it lasts I suppose.

ummm no, $200 is the minimum. Sort of like the "buy-in", you know. $200 will cover the lodging, gas, and the food. If you want to watch a show, go to clubs, buy drinks, and gamble, you will obviously need much more than $200. I plan to bring $400 to $500, so if I save $100 every week from now, it's going to work out perfectly.

"why are you going to waste your fucking money pretending to be badasses by getting overpriced and seemingly useless suites at expensive hotels? "

One or two suite rooms are actually cheaper than getting four regular rooms.

We go there because we can afford it.

You have to understand one thing. Just because you spend more money doesn't mean you are wasting it. In this case, eating at McDonald's for dinner would be a waste of money compared to eating at a Bellagio buffet.

tumble, that's the theme of this trip, and no one who's actually going are complaining (well they wouldn't or they wouldn't go). What's the point of Vegas if there's Morongo nearby where everything else is cheaper?

Why would people choose to go to steak restaurant over mcdonald's? either one will fill up your belly in the end. Why would someone drive a lexus over a volkswagen? either will get you from point a to point b. That's because the end isn't everything to everything.

ubes, if you'd much rather stay at 3 star hotel in downtown LV, then I won't argue with you. And I won't call you a "dumb fuck" for having a different preference.

The theme of this trip is luxury. If it was anything else, we wouldn't have chosen Vegas as our destination. What you are doing is going to a five-star restaurant and only getting an appetizer and water and saying you are "smart" for not "wasting" your money on expensive food.

Buffet in Vegas is like $20 - $30 a person. If you eat at a nice sit down restaraunt, its like $20 - $30 a person.

You will spend almost 1/2 of your $200 just eating dinner twice(if you drink as well, which I'm guessing a group of 21 yr old college students will).

That leaves you $100 to gamble, go to shows, go to clubs, etc... for two days. My personal opinion is that you are better off eating McDonalds equivalent casual food and spending your money on gambling/shows/clubs.

Same with your room. Cheap room = more money for the stuff worth doing.

Also: I dont know why Im saying this since Poison isnt actually going anywhere with anyone.

$20-$50 : Night Clubs

$50-$100 : Shows

Most shows are around $100 each

"So $50 a night for a Suite at the Venetian? LOL "

Yes. A night at a suite in Venetian cost between $5-600. With 15 people going or so, it'll cost each person around $40 plus tax a night.

"Bellagio buffet is $40+ a pop."

$35 per person. But then, we most likely won't eat there every night.

"That MIGHT get you through the front door. "

Cover charge for guy is $30 for most clubs with the exception of XS club, which is $50.

"Most shows are around $100 each "

Yes, but because of the time we are going, most are in discount and cost around $75.

Blue Man Group - $43 cheapest, $79 for the best seats.

Cirque du Soleil:

Criss Angel Believe -$60
KA - $76
LOVE - $77
Zumanity - $75
Le Reve - $105
Lion King - Dark

If there is one thing I have discovered about living so close to the Mexican border, it's that no matter how many people are crammed into a tiny accomodation, the hotel staff tends to look the other way.

However, you do run the risk of the hotel deciding they can kick you out for any reason simply because they're going to know how many people are in that room, and other guests may have noise complaints.

people "sneak in" all the time. when i used to go to family vacation, we'd have around 5 people including my parents. My dad would rent a room for two, make us wait in the car while he checks in, and rent it for the price of two people for five people. I'm sure all of you have done this also. If not, you are an idiot for paying the extra.
