In reality Trump's particular rise (as opposed to the rise of various politicians that ran for GOP) does not need some narrative of intelligence and forward-thinking strategy; all he needed to do was deflect and over-promise. Any comedian knew that.. ask Trump a question, and he just plays on the egos of whoever happens to be listening and makes it sound "great"/"classy". He doesn't need to understand subjects like Clinton's "stoic character", all he had to do was spin any contrary claims, raise doubt, and placate.
