new show "The Masked Singer" was fairly entertaining

6 'celebrities' disguised in colorful costumes sing + give some clues... 4 other 'celebrities' take guesses who it is... one singer gets voted out at the end (& identity revealed)

it's a new TV show that aired tonight

another singing / 'reality' / game show kinda thing

main problems could be how frustratingly long it may take to learn who the other 5 are each show (they are coming back but unclear when)

plus if they are too obscure to have a chance of guessing it could get annoying... like tonight's loser :p

Looks like Hulu has the first episode, so I'll probably take a look... I'm guessing that to avoid giving it away they can't talk, only sing?

"plus if they are too obscure to have a chance of guessing it could get annoying"

Yeah, if they pull from teen and early 20-something celebs then I'd see them revealed and be like, "Who?" ;D

The video date says 2017, so this ranks earlier than the other [two?] that we've seen. Others seem to date no earlier than April 2017, though one article mentions that a store in Corte Madera, California was robbed once in 2016 and again in 2017. This one looks more like a Windows or mixed-brand store than an Apple store, though

And, again.. have to wonder about how much success there is for something like this... not just getting away with it (GPS tracking and their faces on camera probably isn't good, though), but getting demo computers to work once they've left the sales floor... seems futile. "According 9to5Mac, Apple has added a “kill switch” to its store demonstration devices—meaning they are deactivated once they’re removed from the store’s wi-fi network. That’s why the display devices aren’t bolted to tables with steel cables anymore, notes Consumerist. Still, they’re not completely invaluable: Though the devices are reportedly no good for personal use, they can be broken down so some of their parts could be used for other devices, Consumerist reports" ( http://for...ducts-stolen-from-apple-store/ ). So maybe "as is" eBay sales or just street sales to people who don't know any better?

Police could have handled that better, but I've almost started accepting that common beat cops are too poorly trained to think creatively under stress. Of course the police will be fine legally since Jordan was approaching them with a large knife, but two, better-trained individuals could have handled that without risking injury even to themselves.

And here's one way!: The officer on the side of the house had cover from the suspect at the beginning of the shortened video. When he spotted the knife, he actually started *giving up* his covered spot (8:02 in longer video). When the door opened, one option he had was to use either OC spray or a taser through the doorway while still maintaining cover (safe move). Instead he pairs up with his partner's firing angle to clear a fire line but in the process gives up cover and sets up kill space for the suspect to approach them (starting at 8:20 in the longer video) — opening space was not a way to deescalate, it's actually a way to trap someone for a kill. Notice that the suspect doesn't want to give up his own cover until he's given that space [to hang himself].

Anyways, idiots in the LL comments keep mentioning that someone with a knife can throw it more quickly than a taser can be deployed — which is false if the taser is out and aimed — but even if the officers were worried about being charged, they had a perfectly good tree to break up rush space, they just didn't use it. The officer on the side could also have used the downed gutter as a trip obstacle had the officer not given up his cover. They were also in a pair, which means that one can stay lethal while the other can manage non-lethals. Many officers are also discouraged from holding a taser in one hand and a firearm in the other (because this requires multi-task training), but that was an option that better-trained personnel would have made available in the very first moments that the knife was spotted.

Some might call this hindsight bias, but this was immediately obvious (to me, at least) while watching the video. Each time he moved I was like, "No, don't move that way. Bad idea. Maintain cover but give the other officer space to fire if he needs to do so." The officer clearly was not thinking of cover opportunities or deescalation techniques. He wasn't thinking of using obstacles, or of what space was available to him, or of what his movement decisions would do to suspect reaction. All they had was "drop it, or we'll shoot" tunnel vision.

In short: poor training and a legal murder. This would upset me more if I didn't know that competent individuals (usually) wouldn't even make the news or would be in better positions (career-wise or just physical standing). It's just painful to watch people making poor decisions.. it's like a bad horror movie.

A new plastic straw law had unexpected consequences when a man lashed out at a worker at a fast food chain.

The Florida man had just gotten his order Monday evening at a McDonald's in St. Petersburg. He got upset when there weren't any plastic straws out at the condiment station, witness Brenda Biandudi told CNN.

He walked back to the counter and got in a heated argument with an employee about the straws, Biandudi said. Then, video shows him reaching over the counter and grabbing the employee, Yasmine James.

By the end of the night, Daniel Taylor, a 40-year-old homeless man, would be arrested on two charges of simple battery, according to an arrest affidavit from the St. Petersburg Police Department. A lawyer for Taylor could not be reached Wednesday night.

A city ordinance went into effect on January 1 that requires customers to ask for straws. It's a way for businesses to adjust before a ban on single-use plastic straws takes effect in January 2020.

Yeah, I think they can omit the word "possible" in this situation D: ...
Also sounds like the movie "Talk to Her" (2002). In that movie a male nurse impregnates a comatose patient.. she miscarries, and it's unclear if she woke up pregnant or if the child died while she was still sleeping. Weird movie.

"A new plastic straw law"

He seems to be handling well a straw-less world ;)
..That law seems to be the way things have been going with straws. I've heard of dissolving straws being used in some places.. they apparently only last about 10 minutes before becoming useless.

A ̶F̶l̶o̶r̶i̶d̶a̶ California teenager is in police custody after police say her dog tried to attack a female jogger, and then the teen bit the jogger after she defended herself with pepper spray.

The East Bay Regional Park District Police Department said in a statement that the dog attempted to attack the jogger when she was on a run in Oakland’s Anthony Chabot Regional Park on Thursday morning. The jogger used pepper spray against the dog.

Not long after, the dog’s owner - identified by police as a 19-year-old woman - allegedly confronted the jogger.

“A physical altercation ensued, where the victim was bitten by the suspect, causing significant injury,” said the statement. The department posted photos on Facebook showing bite marks on the woman’s forearm.

"pretty exciting robbery video"

That was *very* cool. I hadn't noticed the green-striped guy's participation until reading your comment. It's weird how he has to pick up a friend's weapon — doesn't seem to have his own until then. In the second video (about 1:10) it looks like he runs up, tries to shoot the security guy in the head, gets his firearm hand pushed out of the way, then gets shot. The security guy must be watching a lot of John Wick or Equilibrium for those moves ;D

Yeah.. that's weird. It's like an exaggeration of his normal accent.. like he's had too much voice coaching for other accents and has forgotten how to be British again, so he's "remembering" by playing a particularly British person...

I was thinking that for a bit.. like he didn't realize who was who. I've thought about that too with mass shooting situations.. like, what if a plain-clothed regular person kills the shooter, but then the cops kill that regular person by mistake? That would be a pretty particular set of circumstances, though... But anyways, apparently the three people killed were all related, so the green-striped person was one of the would-be thieves:
http://qco...ne-security-guard-in-coronado/
"Three men (farther 46, and his two sons 29 and 21) were shot and killed by a lone bank security guard when they tried to rob a woman, outside the BAC San Jose branch in Coronado ... In the meleé, the guard is hit by a bullet in the shoulder. He survived and taken to hospital where is recovering. The woman was struck by one of the assailants when he grabbed the money back from her is also recovering in hospital."

Sounds like the woman was making a big cash deposit, so it could be one of those situations where word gets out that certain people attached to a business make frequent cash deposits. Wasn't that what happened with those thieves whose pants were falling off? ;)

(for clarity, apparently the officer who fired was not the one yelling the commands; commands came from the person behind point)
http://www...ficer-involved-shooting-742241
Apparently he was acquitted, though he was fired from the department 2 months after the shooting. It's sad listening to his testimony ( http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/297059746-video ) because he mentions that he was following his [awful and debilitating] training. To his credit, the victim was reaching behind his back, so that's why Brailsford wasn't convicted, but it should have been painfully clear to Brailsford that it wasn't a reach for a weapon (a "read the room" situation). Brailsford also fired before any weapon was visible.. so.. anyways... nice dose of outrage for the evening ;)

“he's on the ground w/ hands behind head, so go cuff him... why does he need to then cross legs, then put hands up (but keep legs crossed!), then crawl, etc :p”

Yeah, totally absurd directions. And I think the officer might have wanted him to “crawl” with his hands up like that? It’s a bit confusing to emphasize hands in the air but then say, “Crawl,” which would be hands on the floor... but yeah, just go cuff him. Simple.

Don’t let systematically harassing the losers in your class tire you out so much that you can’t live your life. Quit bullying.”"

"[Katie Gilroy, director of corporate communications for Keurig Dr. Pepper.] declined to answer further questions about this discrepancy, however, such as why the company would not defend against the lawsuit if the claim is true, or how it could put it on Canadian packaging if it is false, or whether the company disputes the two parts per million claim, or how much real ginger is actually in the product."

lulz... I'm surprised that outright false advertisement on a major brand is still even possible in the first place. I mean, I thought the FDA had to verify ingredients before they could be posted or something?

"Mom Wants To Know If You Could Use Grandma’s Antique, 12-Person Dining Room Table In Your Studio Apartment"
[Onion: News in Brief]
http://loc...grandma-s-antique-1-1831765783
"CHICAGO—Stressing that the furniture would be perfect for hosting guests, your mom wanted to know Tuesday whether you could use Grandma’s antique, 12-person dining room table in your studio apartment. “If you want it, we can haul it over the next time I have a doctor’s appointment in the city,” your mother said, explaining that the table didn’t always have to seat 12 people as there were two leaves that could expand its capacity to 18. “We’re just cleaning out her basement and thought this might work well if you’re having a dinner party. Believe me, those 12 chairs will definitely come in handy the next time some unexpected guests stop by for game night. There’s also a matching china hutch where you can keep all of the antique crystal centerpieces. So, when can you come and take a look?” At press time, your mom warned that the table weighed over 500 pounds, but confirmed that your dad was available next weekend to help carry it up your eight-story walkup."

"NBA Ref Petrified After Seeing Depiction Of Own Death While Looking Under Replay Hood"
[Onion: News in Brief]
http://spo...tion-of-own-death-w-1831776345
"SAN ANTONIO—Staring into the distance with his mouth agape and sweat beading on his forehead, NBA referee JB Derosa was reportedly terrified Monday after seeing a depiction of his own death while looking under the replay hood. “JB was under there a while on what seemed like a routine call, then all of a sudden, he pulled his head out violently. He was shaking, and he had gone completely pale,” said fellow referee Sean Wright, adding that Derosa was in a fugue-like state and completely ignored him when he asked if he was okay, only to later reveal to team physicians that he glimpsed a brief, spectral vision of his future demise in between frames of an attempted block by LaMarcus Aldridge. “After I grabbed his shoulder, he turned around and just started muttering ‘No, no, how?’ as his lower lip trembled in fear. Then his nose started bleeding. We still don’t know what the call was.” At press time, a frantic Derosa was desperately trying to discourage the NBA from holding its All-Star weekend in Charlotte, NC this year."

"and two counts of assault on a female"
..That's a separate charge? That's pretty weird.

A Florida man is behind bars after he allegedly threatened to kill his neighbor with kindness.

“Kindness” is what the 30-year-old suspect, Bryan Stewart, calls his machete, according to police.

It began when two of Stewart’s neighbors went to the suspect’s house, concerned about yelling and banging that had come from the home all day.

Stewart came out of the house with an arm raised holding the machete ― which had the word “kindness” written on it. One of the neighbors stepped in front of the other to block the blade and suffered a half-inch cut on his left hand.

The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Department was called, and deputies arrived and arrested Stewart.

They said that Stewart’s breath smelled of alcohol and he had to be stunned with a Taser before he was put inside the patrol car.

Police also said he had to be hobbled after kicking inside the car and banging his head.

After watching the hooligans video... I now feel bad about doubting all those movies where people ran directly away from speeding cars instead of moving to the side or moving behind objects that would stop the car... this was proof that some people really will do that :(

A substitute teacher in Florida was so angry with a principal that she smeared human feces around a Sarasota park pavilion that the principal had rented for her child’s birthday party, law officers said.

Heather Carpenter, 42, faces a single count of criminal mischief over $1,000, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. She was released after posting a $2,500 cash bond.

Authorities said they became aware of the incident on Dec. 1, when a witness reported seeing a woman, wearing blue gloves and a mask, “placing human waste and fecal matter on the porous wooden tables and grills” at Urfer Family Park in Sarasota.

Mike Hutchinson, who said he was at the park at the time, told Fox 13 News he was “shocked and appalled” when he walked into the pavilion and saw what had happened.

“The smell hit me, and I noticed that she did it to every table,” Hutchinson said. “It was a mixture of urine and feces, and she had it in a big cup and was just pouring it out and wiping it in.”

The gloves and mask sound like premeditation, but not waiting until dark sounds like rushed planning ;D

Do you think that when animals get helped from barrels and jars and fences and stuff that they know that the human helped them, or do they just run away and not think about it? ;)

there have been some animals who've come to humans for help... dolphins or whales or something with netting, plus I feel like there was some land animal video, but can't recall... but smaller prey animals probably think they're escaping attack :p

Deer probably fall into the stupid category. Like, "Oh! I'm trapped in this spikey wire! A human is attacking me! Oh! Somehow I've escaped the spikey wire and that human who was attacking me!" ;D

Police in northern Texas say a woman has been banned from a local Walmart after she spent several hours driving an electric shopping cart around the store's parking lot while drinking wine from a Pringles can.

Police tell the Times Record News that officers responded to a suspicious person call at about 9 a.m. Friday at a Walmart in Wichita Falls, about 125 miles northwest of Dallas.

Wichita Falls police spokesman Jeff Hughes says the woman had reportedly been riding the electric cart around the parking lot for about three hours.
