lol.. that reminds me of that Game of Thrones episode where they talk about how all of their conflicts may just be because people weren't having enough sex :D

"you probably could be putting your time to better use, but that would apply to us all perhaps :p"

I wasted so much more time than that on Caturday :D

..
"awkward moment"

lulz..
For some peeps it's not about kneeling as a Kaepernick-style symbol of support, it's more like that "300" (2006) idea of not kneeling to would-be gods. So this LL cop may just be a Thin Blue Line type, but it could also be avoiding kneeling for its symbolism as weakness and supplication. Lots of LL comments seem to echo that. Kaepernick probably should have come up with a different signal ;)

Good song to use for the next clip:

"plus he looks like a high school student"

Yikes.. I watched the video before reading the title. I 100% thought he was some kid who had misbehaved and was being shamed out of the crowd. :D .. His choice of attire was a problem.

But holy fucking shit. They *really* did ask him if he'd de-fund the police ("Will you commit to de-funding the Minneapolis Police department ... we don't want no mo' police. Is that clear? We don't want people with guns toting around in our community, shooting us down," and he responded, "I cannot support the full abolition of the police department."

People *really* want that? I thought that was a joke or specifically a threat people made about giving pay-cuts to problem departments to incentivize better community relations.. but she was talking about *actually* abolishing the police department. That's insane. That should be a fringe anarchist position, but somehow she got a microphone and got a bunch of idiots to cheer it on. And she was talking about voting him out for it? Last election, it was all Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party members running against each other (no GOP), but I wonder if anyone would really be crazy enough to run on a de-fund platform. Apparently some of the city council have pledged to de-fund, so maybe? D:

Looking more closely at the source of that position..
"Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha" (CTUL) ("Center for United Workers in Struggle")
http://doc...oIVP3m-Q0_3xu4-juFMlg/viewform
(also http://ctul.net/ )

In their more nuanced write-up, they *were* talking about moving funds from police to community programs (in this St. Louis petition, "$20 million from SPPD's budget") as opposed to blanket abolition of the police. I wonder if that was talked about before the camera started rolling for their question to Frey. If not, yeah, "full abolition" would be insane. Their Twitter linked to this NPR article: http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2020/06/03/457251670/how-much-do-we-need-the-police?
It reasonably points out things like..
- Immediate and total de-funding would be a bad idea
- Spending on community programs and drug treatment would decrease crime and the role of police
- Funding housing for the homeless

Those things make sense. De-funding does not.

TLDR:
This Twitter comment hit this:
[@PGtwentytwo]: ""Defund" means to eliminate funding. If that's not what they mean, they should stop saying it."

Also a little scary to see a law school graduate having to look up to an empowered fool on a platform. The Terror of the French Revolution comes to mind.. :|

"if Trump & Fox News are loving talking about it, it's BAD (not that it shouldn't have been obvious that it's not a winning message)"

Oh noes.. did I accidentally agree with Fox News? D:
The protestors may have just summarily ended their own movement.

Yikes again at Minneapolis City Council timeline: "We will be taking intermediate steps toward ending the MPD through the budget process and other policy and budget decisions over the coming weeks and months"

I guess we'll see how their social experiment works out. I have a feeling that it'll be preceded by the flight of business owners from the area, so it may run into funding issues. And an ideal anarchist society can work... but it requires an educated population...

And above I wasn't sure if they had put their "de-fund" question in context before the video starts.. but in re-watching the video.. they were *there* for abolition; they weren't there for fund re-allocation. In the video you can see lots of people wearing "De-fund" shirts and a bunch of posters saying, "Police abolition now." The guy in a Del Piero yellow jersey yells, "Abolish!" Frey asks them to confirm that they mean "abolish," and after they get him to leave, the speakers on the truck were saying, "Then why the fuck did you come?"

This was kind of neat...
In the UP "Crackdown in Minneapolis 2" thread, I brought up that part of what's conditioning police to make that "Feared for my life" statement was Dave Grossman's lectures to police across the country
( http://www...hread=85786&time=1591214448925 ). John Oliver just made similar points on tonight's (Sunday night's) episode:
http://youtu.be/Wf4cea5oObY?t=692

He also talks about the de-fund movement (25:50):
http://youtu.be/Wf4cea5oObY?t=1550
..but he made the same mistake that I did: thinking that "de-fund" was meant in the sense of re-allocating funds to community programs while reducing the role of police... whereas — at least in that Minneapolis protest — they were talking about abolishing the police altogether. He brings up a New Jersey department that dissolved its officers and forced a re-hiring process.. but, again, that wasn't Minneapolis protestors' stated goal.

He also supports the idea of "White Silence is Violence", and at 31:55 he gives the stage to someone (activist Kimberly Jones) who justifies looting and torching of local businesses by saying that "'we' don't own anything" (except for all the community-owned businesses and residences, I guess?) and that the broken social contract with police means that there exists no motivation to care about looting/torching and even to desire it ("As far as I'm concerned they can burn this bitch to the ground"; she cites Trevor Noah for this logic, so I guess he's not helping or she made her own incendiary conclusions from his words). Then she brings up Tulsa, which has become a popular reference lately, so I guess Watchmen made an impact.

She does mention, "They are lucky that what black people are looking for is equality and not revenge," which, if true, would be more self-aware than slave morality feminism (misandrist and matriarchal feminism) has become. But, it was delivered like a threat (i.e., "[Revenge is coming if our demands are not met]"), and in practice it doesn't seem particularly true that there isn't revenge in progress, given that racism by minorities often gets excused by the "power structure" argument, and the very act of rioting in a reactive frame of mind is part of the revenge of boiled-over ressentiment. In other words, she can't pretend to not want revenge while also supporting (or not condemning) misdirected looting and riots. Target may be an outside mega-corporation that shouldn't exist anywhere, but looting it is revenge on economic inequalities and the choices these consumers themselves made to empower those inequalities.

i don't think "Defund the Police" means the same to everyone who is saying it... same happened w/ "Decriminalize the Border" (some maybe meant 'open borders' for all to come & stay freely, but [hopefully] most meant just return it to being handled as a civil matter rather than criminal)

both are terrible messages for Trump/Fox to misrepresent

Two law enforcement agencies acknowledged Monday that officers patrolling Minneapolis during the height of recent protests knifed the tires of numerous vehicles parked and unoccupied in at least two locations in the midst of the unrest.

Video and photo images posted on the news outlet Mother Jones show officers in military-style uniforms puncturing tires in the Kmart parking lot at Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue on May 30.

Images from S. Washington Avenue at Interstate 35W, also showed officers with knives deflating the tires of two unoccupied cars with repeated jabs on May 31. Department of Public Safety spokesman Bruce Gordon confirmed that tires were cut in “a few locations.”

“State Patrol troopers strategically deflated tires ... in order to stop behaviors such as vehicles driving dangerously and at high speeds in and around protesters and law enforcement,” Gordon said.

Gordon said the patrol also targeted vehicles “that contained items used to cause harm during violent protests” such as rocks, concrete and sticks.

“While not a typical tactic, vehicles were being used as dangerous weapons and inhibited our ability to clear areas and keep areas safe where violent protests were occurring,” he said. As in all operations of this size, there will be a review about how these decisions were made.”

Deputies from Anoka County followed state orders and joined the patrol and also cut the tires on vehicles on Washington Avenue, said Anoka County Sheriff’s Lt. Andy Knotz.

Knotz said the deputies got their directions from the state-led Multiagency Command Center [MACC], which was coordinating law enforcement during the protests connected to the death on May 25 of George Floyd.

"I was thinking of this scene"

Oh neat! I still haven't seen any of that show since I'm a heretic ;)

..
"A so-called “Karen” in Arizona was slapped across the face for telling a Native American woman to “go back to Mexico""

Yikes, she may be spending too much time in her Facebook group. Though, at the same time, it's always troubling to see someone threaten someone else with the Panoptic social media lynch mob ("This is going all over the Internet").

..
"knifed the tires of numerous vehicles parked and unoccupied in at least two locations in the midst of the unrest."

Good to see the evidence showing up on that. Early videos of that were from across the parking lot and apparently filmed by the oldest of smart phone cameras (May 31st: http://twi...tatus/1267203570522304513?s=20 )

..
"do they now have to pay for all the tires? (i would hope)"

I hope so too... There was a video from someone talking to the tow truck company (same Twitter link above) where the tow truck guy said, "Four tires is an insurance claim." Looking into it, that's because one or two tires may be less than the deductible, but four would be covered. Still, that claim *should* be settled while acknowledging the fault of the police..

And their tactical claim about deflating tires... It might make sense in limited cases where cars were being attacked when people tried to leave, forcing drivers to become violent to escape. That *can* be sort of an instigation point. If people try to leave a protest-filled area — even if peacefully — protestors have been attacking those vehicles and drivers, even when the cars stop. If the driver gets even a little scared of all the people yelling at them and hitting the windows.. then the driver pushes through, people get hospitalized, then an angry mob feels vindicated, even though they themselves created the confrontation. So police potentially made it a public safety issue: take all cars off the road so that protestors couldn't attack other citizens..

I'm trying to think of alternatives...
• Leave all the cars in place and take a chance with people getting attacked in their cars or attacking protestors (probably a good option for police since it makes the protestors look bad when they attack drivers.. or does it? Again, the mob feels vindicated..)
• Boot only certain cars in problem areas, removing/relocating boots as needed (no car damage but logistically difficult, police boots being limited)
• Tow all cars and set up a limited access area where people have to go to re-claim their cars once the day's protests end?

Kind of a tough spot... don't slash tires and watch people attack each other, or do slash tires and face legal fallout and more public image problems. Definitely: doing it wholesale removes good faith... Hmm.. the only solution is not to play? ;)

It does seem a little scummy for police to remove protestor supplies from cars. They weren't just talking about weapons: they probably meant water and food supplies to limit the length of time protestors could sustain themselves. That's cutting the supply lines. Not really something good to do to free citizens...

I hope most people support that position :D
This can be a great time for police reform and racial equality, but local businesses would be justified in self-protection measures. If people want to be provoked from peaceful protest into riot, the riot should still only target the police — not community businesses. :/

..
I mentioned in the first UP Minneapolis thread* that someone on scene at the George Floyd murder should have drop-kicked Chauvin. A case in point: this HK riot situation popped up today (not sure when it happened, though):

I think the flying kick is from a longer clip during the beginning of the HK riots. If I'm correct, the full scene was:

-thug in uniform tries to snatch a random girl
-two guys rush to help her and pull her away
-cop and guys begin to tussle, beginning of gif happens where cop starts trying to grab one of the guys
-flying kick ensues
-everyone runs away

for the tires, it seems they left no notes as to their actions (since people posting videos could only guess it was the cops), so it still seems crazy even if they felt justified... there would be basically a 100% chance they were slashing tires of innocent people who never would've done anything

most people must've been paying for towing & new tires w/ no clue what happened... even if insurance covers, you risk higher premiums (insurance is a scam!)

...plus obviously the insurance companies should be upset, not that anyone cares about them

[tw]: "for the tires, it seems they left no notes as to their actions (since people posting videos could only guess it was the cops), so it still seems crazy even if they felt justified..."

Definitely. They seemed to have planned it in advance, so they should have planned post-it notes in advance too. That's thousands of dollars of private property damaged with no clear solution presented.

..
[tw]: "there would be basically a 100% chance they were slashing tires of innocent people who never would've done anything"

For real! I somehow doubt that the statistics supported their decision; if a few cars had attacked or been attacked, does that mean slash the tires of dozens of cars? This rep thinks so:
""While not a typical tactic, vehicles were being used as dangerous weapons and inhibited our ability to clear areas and keep areas safe where violent protests were occurring," [Minnesota Department of Public Safety spokesman Bruce Gordon] said" ( http://www...is-protests-police-agencies-sa )
..and somehow that equates to slashing the tires of K-Mart shoppers and news crews....

..
"...plus obviously the insurance companies should be upset, not that anyone cares about them"

Maybe the insurance companies will help lead a class-action lawsuit for it? At the very least, an area lawyer should be jumping on this with one of those billboards, like, "Did police slash your tires? YOU may be entitled to legal compensation. Call Mr. Sues Foryoo."

..
[hood]: "If I'm correct, the full scene was"

Very cool. I so totally wish someone had acted like that while Floyd was being murdered. Maybe more people will be willing now.

"From HBO Max Until It Can Return With Historical Context"
[Onion: News in Brief]

"LOS ANGELES—Calling the show “Important, yet problematic” in its portrayal of modern dating in New York City, HBO Max officials announced Thursday that they had pulled Anna Kendrick’s Love Life from their library until it can return with the proper historical context. “While we understand why certain people are unhappy with the decision, we feel it is important to provide viewers with pertinent information that will help contextualize Darby’s struggles with intimacy, sex, and relationships in 2019 Queens,” said HBO spokesperson Kaavya Gupta, adding that each of the romantic comedy’s 10 episodes would return with important discussions regarding era-specific terms like “fuck buddy,” “sext,” and “total derp.” “Frankly, to allow young viewers to watch Love Life without explaining how white feminism shaped our protagonist and her world as a whole would pretend the problems with this show never existed in the first place. Perhaps, when it returns, families will be able to watch this series with their children and teach them about how fraught dating as a millennial in the digital age really was.” At press time, Gupta told reporters that HBO Max had also denounced problematic depictions in the streaming service’s other shows such as Friends and The Big Bang Theory."

"i noticed way in the back in the left corner, some guy kneeling w/ possibly blood coming out of top of his head... then upside down w/ no head... & a bunch of headless kneeling people... & possibly heads on staffs..."

I had to look up the deal there..
This popped up:
"Symbols of Ancient Egypt in the Late Period: The Twenty-first Dynasty" (1979) (on Google Books http://books.google.com/books?id=qY2dCgAAQBAJ ). A few pages (171–175) talk about the Ramesses VI tomb and some of the imagery... Apparently headless people and people with arms bound behind them can represent enemies, symbolic of people who go against the god Osiris or who may fail the tests of the underworld:
"For the most part the enemies seem to represent the difficulties of daily living and terror about life after death." Their deaths can also mean "serenity for the deceased by virtue of the decisive victory that has been won over the enemy."

There was also a neat excerpt from that tomb (just the cool part, edited for readability): "O the Ones of the Eye who have no head, who are inside their coffins, who see with their neck."

Seeing with one's neck.. that kind of reminds me of "Hereditary" (2018) imagery ..which I won't spoil for you if you haven't seen that :D

Phase 4 will also need all of you to start going into restaurants and stores without masks and pretending that this is endangering absolutely no one. Thank you all.” At press time, Johnson added that he hoped successful observance of protocols would allow the city to soon move into the outright panic and citywide devastation that would characterize Phase 5."

The Luna/Draco twins thing is hilarious. And fem Sirius Black looks like an angry british school teacher. One who always threatens the meter stick.

fem Ryker looks like some girl named Dana. Not any specific Dana, just someone who is named Dana.

These kind of make you wonder if someone should do a shot-for-shot remake of some of these shows/movies but just gender-swap the characters. No politics or social justice like the Ghostbusters or Ocean's remake — just a switch with zero writing changes ;D

That's not too surprising; that website seems to cater specifically to boating enthusiasts.. which.. are people... who... exist..? So they may not have the best encoding :p

The ship was the Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999, which that PortAndTerminal article mentions had gotten into trouble for illegal fishing of rare Galapagos animals in 2017 (tuna, "6,223 sharks ... baby sharks and endangered species like the scalloped hammerhead"; they fish for rare animals and bring them back to China — super ethical).

That article had a good overhead angle, but I can't find it elsewhere. This is a poorly filmed angle near the ground:

Aww; video recorder panned away at the best part ;p
I wonder if Brazil having their own Trump ignoring COVID-19 numbers (President Bolsonaro) has helped or hurt their crime numbers. They'll be passing the U.S. virus numbers pretty soon.. unless Florida manages to screw up even more than they already have ;)

Brazil sits at about 1.1m cases vs. U.S. 2.1m but have a super steep rise in cases ongoing whereas the U.S. seems to have a near-linear rise (not that that's good either).
"“If you think Trump is stupid, you don’t know Bolsonaro,” said [Dr. Thais Couto, a 32-year-old lung surgeon in Sao Paulo]"

India may also continue to climb; their earlier lockdown basically failed, and their government hasn't been willing to initiate a new one despite hitting record daily infections this week ( http://www...ixes-another-nationwide-lockdo ). They also basically killed record numbers of poor by stranding them hundreds of miles from home, forcing them to walk and starve along the way. A bit of an Elysium situation going on: the poor left to die en masse while ultra rich ride it out in style. Tests still in gross shortage.

"Facebook Announces Plan To Break Up U.S. Government Before It Becomes Too Powerful"
[Onion: News in Brief; June 22nd, 2020]
http://www...-u-s-government-bef-1844121902
"“It’s long past time for us to take concrete actions against this behemoth of governance that has gone essentially unchecked since its inception,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, noting that while the governing body may have begun with good intentions, its history showed a culture of recklessness and a dangerous disregard for the consequences of its decisions. “Unfortunately, those at the top have been repeatedly contemptuous of the very idea of accountability or reform, and our only remaining course is to separate the government into smaller chunks to prevent it from forming an even stronger monopoly over the public.” Zuckerberg closed his remarks with repeated assurances that despite a likely legal battle ahead, no one government could stand up to the fortitude of Facebook."

Yeah they don't seem dressed for the occasion. Maybe this was right after the "peaceful" part of the protest ended, so they still didn't have riot police present? ;)

So far there hasn't been any data on cities with protests having coronavirus increases, which — if true ("if" since the media currently has a stake in the virtues of the protests) — could mean: masks have been doing good work in the crowds, and/or most protestors tend to be too young to care if they have infections or too poor to afford testing.

But it also makes me wonder how the combination of an economic downturn and increases in positive cases will battle it out. Meaning.. I would guess most protestors would be members of non-essential or low-paid sectors (they have lots of time to protest), which means that increased employment will see a reduction in protests, but if coronavirus cases continue to rise, then people will be out of work for longer despite "just ignore it" policies, fueling more protests. But, protests beyond a tipping point will fuel backlash; at some point (and maybe we passed it) there will be forceful crack-downs to stop further economic damage since lawmakers looking at budgets will decide that "Criminals thrive on the indulgence of Society's understanding" ;)

..
"i'm surprised that fits in its stomach"

I know birds have crazy stomachs, but I'm just going to guess without Googling that it must only partially digest the rat and then throw up the bones ;p

Probably a Clone Wars thing? They flimsily ret-con Darth Maul's death like how Boba Fett was ret-conned in the EU, so I think Clone Wars fans might like the impression...
I was too burnt out on Star Wars to bother watching that one, but I've heard good things.

Agreed on them being good impressions! I wonder if there was a pronunciation-related reason for him hooking on «Señorita» or if that was just for fun...

Woohoo! \:D/
•"GTFO", -20% (now $27.99)... not sure that's enough off. Still considered early access; it can be painful to keep re-adjusting to a game that keeps going through revisions..
•Cooking Simulator, -30% (now $13.99).. I'd prefer 90% off, but I'm probably getting that now :p
•Doom (2016), -70% (now $5.99)
•Doom Eternal, -50% (now $29.99)
•Outlast 2, -75% (now $7.49); not sure I've heard of it before, but it looks interesting (Survival horror)
•Some Alien:Isolation DLC on sale for $1 or $2 per DLC.. amazingly addictive game for me, btw :p
