“A metallurgist in Washington state pleaded guilty to fraud Monday after she spent decades faking the results of strength tests on steel that was being used to make U.S. Navy submarines.

Elaine Marie Thomas, 67, of Auburn, Washington, was the director of metallurgy at a foundry in Tacoma that supplied steel castings used by Navy contractors Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding to make submarine hulls.

From 1985 through 2017, Thomas falsified the results of strength and toughness tests for at least 240 productions of steel — about half the steel the foundry produced for the Navy, according to her plea agreement, filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma. The tests were intended to show that the steel would not fail in a collision or in certain “wartime scenarios," the Justice Department said.

Ocean's 80:

Three suspects were arrested Saturday night after dozens ransacked a Nordstrom department store near San Francisco in what police are calling a "smash-and-grab" incident.

About 80 suspects were involved in the crime at the department store in Broadway Plaza, an outdoor mall in Walnut Creek east of San Francisco, and they fled in at least 10 different vehicles, Lt. Ryan Hibbs at the Walnut Creek Police Department told CNN.

"A number of vehicles were leaving. We managed to stop one of them," said Hibbs, adding that no injuries were reported.

Authorities are questioning those who were arrested to determine the identities of the other suspects, Hibbs said.

The manager of a nearby restaurant told CNN affiliate KPIX that the looters were wearing masks and carried what appeared to be crowbars.

"There was a mob of people," Brett Barrett said. "The police were flying in. It was like a scene out of a movie. It was insane. ... It was a scary scene for a moment."

Police have not yet estimated a dollar amount for the stolen items, Hibbs said.

The incident followed a series of similar lootings Friday night in Union Square and surrounding areas in San Francisco, including at a Louis Vuitton store, a Burberry store, a jewelry store, a Bloomingdale's, a Walgreens, cannibis dispensaries and even an eyeglass shop, Police Chief Bill Scott said at a news conference Saturday.

I wonder how media propaganda might portray incidents like that to dissuade future mob theft. Like, maybe they could bring up a graphic of every person on the security footage, then show the names of every person (i.e., showing that each person was identified), then have a line saying how they were charged and/or convicted. It would be an especially strong statement if 100% of those who stole were prosecuted, since that would show would-be thieves that mob anonymity won't help them.

This semi-realistic lightsaber fight scene has been making the rounds:

"To The DEATH"
[Corridor; October 24th, 2021]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAzY28C8Syc

You have to ignore the bad acting from fish-out-of-water janitor girl and her acting partner, and also ignore the sort of stupid story they try to build in the short time frame... but it comes from the Corridor Crew's attempt to give a more realistic portrayal of how lightsaber mechanics would work (omitting force powers for the moment).

Cherub Cow

Something about cranberry over-saturating the taste receptors and water resetting those receptors (removing the cranberry) while the water/cranberry solution simultaneously re-activates the receptors in a terrible ballet of unbinding and rebinding of cranberry? ;D

I think it would taste better if sugar bound to receptors better, but sugar tends to wash off the receptors more easily than cranberry, so you end up tasting *just* the cranberry, which is gross by itself. (This is just a guess; was too lazy to Google for confirmation.)

An Alabama inmate whose lethal injection was halted because medical staff couldn’t find a suitable vein for the execution has died of cancer almost four years later.

Diagnosed in 2014 with B-cell lymphoma, Hamm argued before the scheduled execution that the blood cancer had progressed while the state argued that he was in remission.

“Doyle will be remembered for his generous and forgiving spirit and his ability to always stay positive even in the face of the most dire adversities. He will be missed by his friends and family,” Harcourt (his lawyer) wrote in a tribute.

"A 50-year-old man tried to pass off a silicone arm as his own at a Covid-19 vaccination clinic in northern Italy, in an attempt to get a vaccine certificate without actually getting inoculated."

That's clever. ;D
Not too many ways to avoid it once in the room, though, short of outright bribery, which would be risky (they have your info and could easily report you). Once injected, the best way would be to immediately drain blood from the injection site, that way it would only be a partial dose. Beyond that, applying high heat to the area (super hot bath prioritizing submerging the arm) would cause some of the mRNA to fail.

People will definitely start networking to find out which health care workers or shot administrators disagree with the mandates and will sign cards and put shots down the drain. Governments that mandate shots while threatening people's livelihoods are going to have to contend with these consequences. It's only a matter of time before the propaganda starts blaming hidden cabals of not-really-vaccinated people for the numbers ;)

A 30-year-old man jumped out of an airplane as it was taxiing at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport Saturday.

"Initial reports indicate that while the flight was taxing to the gate, a Customer onboard exited the aircraft via a rear galley door," Southwest Airlines spokesperson Dan Landson said. "The flight's Captain stopped the aircraft and notified Air Traffic Control (ATC)."

It is unclear how the aircraft door was opened.

The man landed on the tarmac and made his way to the fire station, entered the building and locked himself inside a dormitory room, Keller said.

"It is unclear how the aircraft door was opened."

Hmm... my understanding has been that those doors can still be opened with the emergency levers when the plane hasn't pressured the cabin yet. That might be one of those situations where they can't do much about that possibility (the possibility of people opening before pressurization), since adding additional security would mean compromising safety. At best, they could make it a protocol to have a flight attendant posted at the door during taxiing. I'm sure the flight crew will be super psyched to have their labor spread even thinner... If a dress code were brought to airline travel, people might behave better ;D

..
"& i recommend "Barry" [HBO] more than both of those..."

Yes! Barry has been fun. I think we talked about it in some of these threads. It's been funny seeing the real-life actors pretend to be bad actors who want to be good actors. It's like a Pirandello play. I was almost worried that Sarah Goldberg ("Sally" character) was *actually* a bad actress, but she was in "The Night House" movie and seemed to handle the role realistically. (That's a good movie, btw).

It includes more SF smash-and-grab thieves, though nothing too satisfying there. SF might need another Dirty Harry movie to set it straight ;)

Since they blurred some people but not others.. I'm kind of wondering if the non-blurred people signed releases or something... which raises more questions.. like... did they sign releases under threat of legal action, or do they not see a problem with being outed as criminals? lulz

i like the upgrades & the planter box hiding it at night but doesn't seem to be causing enough terror yet

i'd like to see more of the "irresponsibly dangerous speeds" stuff :p

or how about flinging out cockroaches

If he wasn't trying to be so good-natured, he'd definitely be on the terror track :D

..I do wonder if smash-and-grabs would decrease if thieves kept detonating claymores ;D

..
That thing with teachers grabbing money for school supplies might work better if it were more like this human claw machine:

Comments suggest that this mustang was probably vandalized with spray-foam by the owner since he knew that his car was being repo-ed:
http://imgur.com/gallery/hB1gmza
..that makes sense, since someone was able to get inside the vehicle and went through the trouble of opening the hood. If it was an angry 3rd party, they probably wouldn't have been that detailed.

Obituary
Renay Mandel Corren

El Paso, TX—A plus-sized Jewish lady redneck died in El Paso on Saturday.

Of itself hardly news, or good news if you're the type that subscribes to the notion that anybody not named you dying in El Paso, Texas is good news. In which case have I got news for you: the bawdy, fertile, redheaded matriarch of a sprawling Jewish-Mexican-Redneck American family has kicked it. This was not good news to Renay Mandel Corren's many surviving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom she even knew and, in her own way, loved. There will be much mourning in the many glamorous locales she went bankrupt in: McKeesport, PA, Renay's birthplace and where she first fell in love with ham, and atheism; Fayetteville and Kill Devil Hills, NC, where Renay's dreams, credit rating and marriage are all buried; and of course Miami, FL, where Renay's parents, uncles, aunts, and eternal hopes of all Miami Dolphins fans everywhere, are all buried pretty deep. Renay was preceded in death by Don Shula.

Because she was my mother, the death of zaftig good-time gal Renay Corren at the impossible old age of 84 is newsworthy to me, and I treat it with the same respect and reverence she had for, well, nothing. A more disrespectful, trash-reading, talking and watching woman in NC, FL or TX was not to be found. Hers was an itinerant, much-lived life, a Yankee Florida liberal Jewish Tough Gal who bowled 'em in Japan, rolled 'em in North Carolina and was a singularly unique parent. Often frustrated by the stifling, conservative culture of the South, Renay turned her voracious mind to the home front, becoming a model stay at home parent, a supermom, really, just the perfect PTA lady, volunteer, amateur baker and-AHHAHAA HA! HA! HA! Just kidding, y'all! Renay - Rosie to her friends, and this was a broad who never met a stranger - worked double shifts with Doreen, ate a ton of carbs with Bernie, and could occasionally be stirred to stew some stuffed cabbage for the kids. She played cards like a shark, bowled and played cribbage like a pro, and laughed with the boys until the wee hours, long after the last pin dropped. At one point in the 1980's, Renay was the 11th or 12th-ranked woman in cribbage in America, and while that could be a lie, it sounds great in print. She also told us she came up with the name for Sunoco, and I choose to believe this, too. Yes, Renay lied a lot. But on the plus side, Renay didn't cook, she didn't clean, and she was lousy with money, too. Here's what Renay was great at: dyeing her red roots, weekly manicures, dirty jokes, pier fishing, rolling joints and buying dirty magazines. She said she read them for the articles, but filthy free speech was really Renay's thing. Hers was a bawdy, rowdy life lived large, broke and loud. We thought Renay could not be killed. God knows, people tried. A lot. Renay has been toying with death for a decades, but always beating it and running off in her silver Chevy Nova. Covid couldn't kill Renay. Neither could pneumonia twice, infections, blood clots, bad feet, breast cancer twice, two mastectomies, two recessions, multiple bankruptcies, marriage to a philandering Sergeant Major, divorce in the 70's, six kids, one cesarean, a few abortions from the Quietly Famous Abortionist of Spring Lake, NC or an affair with Larry King in the 60's. Renay was preceded in death by her ex-boyfriend, Larry King. Renay was also sadly preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Cathy Sue Corren Lester Trammel Webster, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, who herself was preceded in death by two marriages, a fudge shop and one eyeball lost in a near-fatal Pepsi bottle incident that will absolutely be explored in future obituaries. Losing her 1-eyed badass b**** of a daughter in 2007 devastated Renay, but it also made her quite homeless, since Cathy pretty much picked up the tab. A talented and gregarious grifter, Renay M. Corren eked out her final years of luxury (she literally retired at 62) under the care, compassion, checking accounts and, evidently, unlimited patience of her favorite son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lourdes Corren, of world-famous cow sanctuary El Paso, TX. Renay is also survived by her son Jeffrey Corren and his endlessly tolerant wife Shirley, of Powell's Point, NC; Scott Corren, and what's left of his colon, of Hampton, VA; Marc and Laura Corren, the loveliest dirt farmers of Vernon, TX (seriously, where is that); and her favorite son, the gay one who writes catty obituaries in his spare time, Andy Corren, of - obviously - New York City. Plus two beloved granddogs, Mia and Hudson. Renay was particularly close to and grateful for the lavish attentions of her grandaughter Perla and her great-grandchildren Elijah and Leroy, as well as her constant cruise companions Sam Trammell of Greenville, NC, and Adam Corren of El Paso, TX. Renay took tremendous pride in making 1 gay son and 2 gay grandchildren, Sam Trammell and Adam Corren.

There will be a very disrespectful and totally non-denominational memorial on May 10, 2022, most likely at a bowling alley in Fayetteville, NC. The family requests absolutely zero privacy or propriety, none what so ever, and in fact encourages you to spend some government money today on a 1-armed bandit, at the blackjack table or on a cheap cruise to find our inheritance. She spent it all, folks. She left me nothing but these lousy memories. Which I, and my family of 5 brothers and my sister-in-laws, nephews, friends, nieces, neighbors, ex-boyfriends, Larry King's children, who I guess I might be one of, the total strangers who all, to a person, loved and will cherish her. Forever. Please think of the brightly-frocked, frivolous, funny and smart Jewish redhead who is about to grift you, tell you a filthy joke, and for Larry King's sake: LAUGH. Bye, Mommy. We loved you to bits.

RIP RENAY MANDEL CORREN 10 MAY 1937 - 11 DEC 2021

"An Idaho sheriff is facing charges for allegedly threatening a church girls' group at gunpoint during a Thanksgiving ding-dong-ditch activity gone wrong"

sheriff's version:
he had received threats from one guy & harassment from another, then that night:
"When his Ring doorbell camera activated a second time, around 8 p.m., he heard yelling and went outside in his socks, long johns and a t-shirt with a gun in hand but no flashlight.

The sheriff said he saw a vehicle coming back down from the end of the road and stopped it, before opening the driver’s side door and grabbing the driver by the hair and pulling her from the vehicle.

Rowland said he asked the driver "who the f*** are you and what the f*** are you doing" a couple times before finally telling the woman to "get the f*** out of here."
"

church group's perspective:
"
Interviewed separately by investigators, the driver, a woman and youth group leader who had long been Rowland’s neighbor, said the sheriff did not recognize her that night.

She said seven minor girls, between the ages of 12 and 16, were in the car with her delivering "thankful turkeys," made by tracing their hands and writing messages why they were thankful for certain people. The sheriff’s wife was one of the intended recipients.

The girls were to deliver them by "taping a turkey on the door, ringing the doorbell, and running away before the recipient knew who had delivered the turkey," according to the affidavit. Nearly caught by Rowland, the girls returned to the car "giggling" and "laughing," but as the chaperone drove past Rowland’s residence, he had firearm in his hand and waved her down.

She noted that when the car door opened, the inside of the car illuminated, showing that seven minor girls were inside. Rowland lifted his gun and pointed it at the driver, as well as at the front passenger seat where two of the girls were seated and then back at the driver.

"Get the f*** out of the car," the sheriff instructed, according to the woman. As she motioned to put the car in park, he yanked her by the hair. She attempted to explain they were trying to deliver something for his wife and that she was his neighbor. But Roland allegedly lifted the gun and pointed it at head, about two inches from her forehead.

"That’s when I really got scared because the gun was still at my head and he didn’t know who I was," the woman told investigators, according to the affidavit.

I'm hearing good preliminary reviews that make me optimistic about the direction the Wachowskis took. I'll likely be watching it at a friend's for Christmas. Speaking of which..

Oh, I watched the new Matrix.
Pretty good! It didn't have a strong purpose to it, but it had a lot of great lines that made me wonder if the Wachowskis were actually going *anti*-woke, which was cool. I'll probably watch it again before any significant review, though..

i think the message was just because the matrix was a movie doesn't mean it's not real, so you should jump off a building or guzzle any red pills you can find

In a now-viral tweet on Sunday, Kristin Livdahl said that when her 10-year-old daughter asked the Alexa voice assistant on their Amazon Echo for a “challenge,” it suggested the child do something lethal.

“Plug in a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch a penny to the exposed prongs,” it said.

An Amazon spokesperson told HuffPost via email that as soon as the company became aware of this error, it quickly fixed it.
